Summer holiday activities for working parents

Family having fun in the summer

Hooray, its’ the summer holidays. That means long days of carefree fun … oh wait, that only works for children, because you still have to go to work and tend to you children while school is out. Caring for children is a full-time job in itself and you know that you’ll have to work double-time to fit your career and parenting into your schedule. Here’s how you can keep your kids busy while you are busy at work.

Some parents manage long summer vacations by sending their little owns to camps or daily childcare. But not everyone can afford this luxury. But have no fear, you can still manage your office workload while your kids are on their summer break. Here are some ideas to make the challenges less challenging.

DIY lemonade stand

Have your kids craft their own lemonade stand while you are at work. All they will need is four wooden crates and some supplies you probably already have at home. First, the kids should paint the crates and leave them to dry. Then, they join the crates together in two rows, with the front of the crates alternating. Now, they let their imagination run wild and decorate the stand. Will they write the lemonade price on the cardboard chalk or a piece of paper? Will they tie a balloon on it or decorate it with freshly picked flowers from the garden? What will be the name of their business? After they are all done crafting the stand, it’s time they make refreshing lemonade and wait for their first customers – the parents. Sure, the customers will probably frown upon the mess that the little lemonade sellers have made, but it will be forgotten the second they have a sip of the cold, refreshing drink. After all, when life (and summer) gives us lemons, we make lemonade.

Your kids will probably love their small business so much they will consider expanding their customer base by going outside and selling lemonade to neighbors and by-passers. To save them the effort of squeezing all those lemons by hand, we recommend they use CJ30E – this motor powered citrus squeezer will squeeze out all the vitamins and catch the pulp in its mesh filter.

Indoor camping

One of children’s most loved summer activities is camping. But they don’t have to go to the woods or the seaside – turning your living room into a campsite can be just as fun. Kids also love doing tasks that make them feel grown up and accomplished, so planning and organizing everything will make them feel important.

First, the kids create a camping ambiance by setting out sleeping bags and making a tent with blankets. Then they decorate the tents, put up some string lights, bring out their stuffed bears or perhaps even the Christmas tree which will play the role of a pine tree for the evening. Then, they prepare camp snacks and drinks. And finally, organize games for the entire family to enjoy. And voila, enjoy your mini camping holiday when you come home. Turn off all the lights, eat snacks by the campfire (a.k.a. candles), play cards, ready by flashlight, tell scary stories, or sing to your favorite guitar tune. If your kids are older, they can have a laptop and a movie night and if you have a garden, finish the night off with a real campfire and delicious marshmallows.

Boredom jar

It is inevitable. Children will get bored on their summer vacation. When they do, make them do their own boredom jar. They should write what they like to do on pieces of paper and put all the papers in a jar. When bored, they simply pull out one of the papers and do the activity written on it.

You can help them write the list, too. They can write a letter to grandmother. Wash their bikes or your car. Make playdough structures. Play indoor football with a paper ball.

Make a time capsule

This is probably our favorite activities. We can simply imagine all the emotions the little ones (and their parents) will feel after finding the capsule when they are not so little anymore. Have them collect items that they think represent the time they’re living in and put them into a box. Then, hide the box and agree on a future date when you will open it up again.

Household chores

And this is probably your children’s least favorite activity. But helping around the house can also be fun (besides teaching them responsibility and offering a sense of accomplishment). Make each chore comes with a different fun twist. Make them water the plants while dancing. Make a grocery list then sing it out like an opera singer. Take out the trash while jumping on one leg. Set a timer who folds towels the fastest. Make toasts in our T1100INF toaster and draw faces on them with jam. Delicious and fun, just what summer holidays are all about.

Finding work-parenting balance can be difficult. But with a bit of planning and determination, you can make sure your kids have hours of fun while you spend these hours working.
