What you need to know about washing your baby’s clothes

First time parents usually wonder how to best take care of their babies, including their clothes. It doesn’t have to be complicated, though. Here are a few tips on how to get your baby’s clothes clean and soft without much hassle.

Clean your washing machine. Run the cleaning cycle (like SterilTub) or an empty cycle at a high temperature with vinegar in the drum to remove any odours. At the same time, it will kill the bacteria and create a more hygienic environment for your baby’s clothes.

Read the care tags. A set of washing care instructions, such as water temperature and hand/machine wash, will help you keep your baby’s clothes looking their best after laundry.

Choose the right detergent. If your baby doesn’t have allergies or extremely sensitive skin, there is no need to buy a special detergent specifically for their clothes. Just choose a regular detergent without intensive fragrance or conditioning chemicals. You might want to choose a liquid detergent, as they usually rinse out more completely than powders.

Softener – yes or no? As baby skin is particularly delicate, try to avoid fabric softeners. They often contain chemicals and fragrances, which can cause irritations. Instead, use vinegar to naturally soften your baby’s clothes.

Dryer or line drying? Unless specifically written on the care label, there is no reason to avoid using a tumble dryer for your baby’s clothes. Chances are, you’ll be doing an infinite amount of laundry during their childhood, so why not save some time? Drying them in the sun is also a good idea, as sunlight works as a disinfectant for laundry and also lightens the stains on white fabrics.
