How to minimize screen time for kids during holidays?

In the modern age of technology, we’re surrounded by screens. But most of us still remember how we used to spend our summers: spending most of the day outside with our friends, running, climbing, exploring. It’s easy to point fingers at today’s kids for not acting the same. But let’s face it – if we were in their shoes today, could we stay away from all the screens? Probably not. And while we have no influence over modern society, there are some strategies that can help minimize kids’ screen time.

Enroll them in camps
Enroll your children in summer colonies, camps, and other similar activities. When children are in the company of other children with organized activities and under adult supervision, they won’t be bored to reach for the phones. If you choose the right camp, your kids will be able to learn something new, play sports and forge new friendships. Talk to your child about what they would enjoy and help them choose an activity. Let them create real summer memories!

Family sports activities
Stick to the principle that everybody needs to try new things because we only have one life to live. The kids will be thrilled, and so will you and your partner. Canyoning, cycling, kayaking, hiking, climbing, diving… Come to think about it – the possibilities are endless.

Be a role model
Remember, you are the greatest role model for your children. If you’re constantly on the phone, in front of a computer or TV set, the children will accept such behavior as normal. So, set boundaries for yourself too.

Set time limits
If you can, set time limits when your child can use the devices. If the child doesn’t obey the set rules, you can try and figure out if the device has a so-called Parent mode and set the usage limits.

Identify areas in your home where devices should not be used
You can easily set rules that some or all devices should not be used in the bathroom or behind the dining table. Then make everyone stick to it.

In the areas where mobile devices and computers can be used, define a ‘one screen at a time’ rule. Do not allow your child to use the phone and computer at the same time while watching TV. The same should apply to adults. If you are watching a movie with children, leave your phone alone.

Forget about the phone on vacation
Vacations are a time to see the world and experience new things, not spend all day playing a video games or chatting online. Bring board games, books and plan plenty of interesting activities for the kids, so that they will forget about their phones and tablets.

Battling excessive use of screen time can be hard on the both the kids and the parents, but keep in mind that constant exposure to screens can impair children’s ability to establish other social contacts, independence, and ingenuity.
