Isn’t there a book on stains in the garage underneath the Christmas decorations and the four winter tires? Maybe, but now you have one in the palm of your hand. From K to V.

Ketchup: Dab with clear dishwashing liquid and let work 5-6 hours. Alternative: Soak a few hours in a mixture of half water and half glycerine. If the stain is still visible after washing, dab with benzine or a mixture of ammonia 25% and water (1 tbs. ammonia to 1 l water).

Lipstick: Dip the stain in whole milk. Change the milk when it no longer draws colour from the lipstick. Put clear dishwashing liquid on the stain and let it work 4-6 hours. If there is colour remaining after washing, dab with rubbing alcohol when the garment is dry.

Lotion: Use benzine. Place a piece of paper towel under the spot. Moisten around the spot with benzine to avoid staining and then dab the spot directly. Continue until the spot is almost gone.

Make-up: Moisten with clear dishwashing liquid and place in a plastic bag 5-6 hours. If the stain is not completely removed, scrub with rubbing alcohol.

Mascara: Pour dishwashing liquid on and let it work in a plastic bag 5-6 hours. If that is not enough, dab with benzine.

Milk: Dab a little clear dishwashing liquid on the spot, lock the garment in a plastic bag and let work overnight. If there are some fatty spots remaining, remove with carbonated water.

Mould: Don’t let mould sit for a long time. Soak the clothing in cold water a little while before you rub with soap or clear dishwashing liquid. If there are fatty stains remaining, remove them with carbonated water.

Mud: Let it dry. Brush off as much as possible. Rub with clear dishwashing liquid and place in a plastic bag 5-6 hours.

Mustard: Pour clear dishwashing liquid on the spot and let it work 5-6 hours. If there are traces of the stain after washing, dab with a little benzine or a mixture of ammonia 25% and water (1/2 tbs. to 1/2 l water).

Nail polish: Lay the garment on an absorbent underlay. Dab with acetone and dry immediately with a paper towel. Remember to remove the garment from the underlay so the stain does not spread. Acetate fabrics do not tolerate acetone – use amyl acetate instead.

Oil: Rub the stain with butter. Alternative: Drip benzine on the stain and press with a paper towel on both the inside and outside. Remember to move the garment, so the stain does not spread once the paper has absorbed the oil.

Paint, oil based: Dab new stains with a little turpentine. Scrub dried spots with brown soap and let work overnight in a plastic bag. Scrape the soap off and wipe with a damp cloth.

Peach: Rinse the spot immediately with water as hot as the fabric can take. If the stain is not completely gone, dab with clear dishwashing liquid or soak in warm milk. If necessary, rub the stain with liquid glycerine and let it set for 10 hours, or moisten with diluted acetic acid or hydrogen peroxide.

Pencil: Rub with an eraser. Alternative: put clear dishwashing liquid on it and let set 5-6 hours.

Perfume: Dab a mixture of equal parts water and rubbing alcohol.

Pollen: Remove the loose pollen with a vacuum or dab with tape. After, dab with clear dishwashing liquid and let it work overnight.

Shoe polish: Put glycerine on the spot and let set overnight.

Soda: Rub with ice-cold water. If that’s not enough, moisten the stain with dishwashing liquid and let it set 4-5 hours.

Tea: Dip the garment in whole milk until the milk has coloured. Then dab with clear dishwashing liquid and let work 5-6 hours in a plastic bag. Alternative: Pour glycerine on the spot and let work 10-15 minutes. Remove very stubborn stains with alcohol.

Tobacco: Soak the clothing in detergent that contains enzymes or moisten stains directly with the agent. Let it work some hours.

Tomato sauce: Dab with clear dishwashing liquid and let work 5-6 hours. Alternative: Soak a few hours in a mixture of half water and half glycerine. If the stain is still visible after washing, dab with benzine or a mixture of ammonia 25% and water (1 tbs. ammonia to 1 l water).

Vomit: Remove as much as possible. Rub with dishwashing liquid. Let it work in a plastic bag 5-6 hours.
