So much more than an ice closet

So Much More Than An Ice Closet

Today, refrigerators and freezers are taken for granted, as are many other household appliances. In the past people have been limited in their food storage. Most of the (prepared) food had to be eaten immediately. In case people wanted to preserve some food for a long(er) time, they had to dry it, smoke it, put it in jars or cans, or simply make jam from it. All in all, refrigerators and freezer chests were simply not known to people for a long time. And even when they heard of them, they could not afford these modern ice closets.

The ice making business

Inbetween, the ice cube making businesses emerged. People bought large (mainly imported) pieces of ice from traders, which were then put into a chest, a kind of ancestor of today’s freezer, and they also stored food alongside. As there was no external cooling, the ice melted the natural way and eventually it was time to buy a new piece of ice.

All-in-one boxes

Fast forward a couple of decades and we can see new kind of boxes. A modern refrigerator also includes a freezer. When choosing such an appliance once should follow two very important criteria – how much space you have in your apartment and how much food you want to store in it.

The fact is that a modern refrigerator will keep you food fresh longer. This is important as fresh food is full of taste and rich in nutritional value.

And there are several technologies that help preserve freshness as well. The so-called CrispZone extends the freshness of your produce with low temperature, automatic humidity control and special light, called VitaLight. VitaLight maintains the natural ripening process to retain vitamins and keep freshly picked or bought fruit and vegetables fresh and crisp for a longer time. Even humidity is closely monitored and controlled. SmartHumidity technology keeps the humidity in the drawer at optimum level at all times thanks to a special membrane which automatically lets out excess moisture.

Food order

Did you know that there is a certain order of how different food should be stored inside a refrigerator? To simplify things, we have prepared a short guide. Typically, the temperature in the refrigerator rises from the bottom up. Firstly, think of foods that need to be heat treated in some way to be edible – these should be placed in the lower temperature zones of the refrigerator. Other immediately edible foods (and raw food) can also be placed on warmer shelves. Even among the foods that need to be cooked, there should be a similar hierarchy. Put the foods that need to be cooked at the highest temperature on the lowest shelf or on the lowest temperature part of the refrigerator. Or … you can take advantage of Gorenje refrigerators with IonAir with MultiFlow 360° tehcnology which ensures the same temperature on every shelf by actively blowing in air into the refrigerator itself. Simple, right?
