5 ways to get extra space in your utility area

Practical ideas for an utility area

There’s usually only a limited space available for the utility area, but we have some ideas how to make the most out of every nook and cranny.

1. See what’s available. Take exact measurements of the available space to make sure you’ll buy a washing machine and/or dryer that fits. Luckily, there are plenty of different slim models available even with larger load capacities, so a limited space doesn’t have to mean you will have to wash more often.

2. Vertical space. Maximize your space by putting your washing machine and tumble dryer on top of each other. Add a ladder shelf, which is tall and narrow and doesn’t use much space.

3. Add a countertop. If your washer and dryer are set up side by side, you can put a countertop over them to create a workspace for folding the laundry. You can also place a few stylish boxes or baskets there to get additional storage space for small accessories.

4. Use an over-the-door rack. Hang it on the inside of your utility room door and get some additional space to store laundry and other cleaning supplies.

5. Hang up your ironing board. Just leaning you ironing board against the wall somewhere isn’t exactly a practical solution, especially if you have small children or pets. Why not hang it on the back of a closet door instead? You just need to secure two hooks and voila – the ironing board is out of sight but within reach!
