The homeschool of household chores

Back to school time is all about learning – new routines, schedules, knowledge … And it shouldn’t be limited to school stuff only. Sooner or later kids need to learn about household activities and life as well. These are some tasks that the kids can (and will) pick up quickly.

Sorting toys

Talk with the child about how important it is to have a tidy space to play in and how they can make other children happy by donating toys and clothes that they have outgrown. But also be realistic in your expectations: separating the useful from the clutter can prove to be quite a difficult task for many adults and it might be completely overwhelming for a child. So it’s best to start small and ask them to pick out one toy to donate. Bonus tip: make also sure that you are setting a good example by buying only what is needed and getting rid of your unneccessary clutter as well.

Doing the laundry

Even toddlers can help out with laundry tasks. You can start by asking them to pair socks, bring their clothes to the laundry basket or help load the dryer. As they grow bigger you can start teaching them how to sort the laundry and which washing programmes are used for which type. That’s where investing in appliances with a simple user interface really pays of. For example, Gorenje WaveActive washing machines allow you to start washing in just 3 easy steps; turn on the washing machine, select the programme and press start!

Doing the dishes

Teach your child to help you do the dishes and you will hit two birds with one stone: you will gain a trustworthy helper, one, who will in turn think twice about taking a new glass from the cupboard everytime they want a drink. And it doesn’t matter if you own a dishwasher or do the dishes by hand, even a toddler can help you clean the table after a meal, while the bigger kids can wipe the dishes or load and unload the dishwasher.

Making the bed

A made bed is good start to any day and even young kids can learn to do it. To make the task easier for small hands, choose the simplest possible bedding, without unnecessary sheets, blankets, and bedspreads.

Cleaning the floors

Sweeping is a simple task that many young kids will enjoy, so it might be a good idea to buy a small broom let them help you. Bigger kids can also clean the floors with a mop or vacuum cleaner, so you might want to think about investing in an easy-to-use cordless upright vacuum. Just make sure all the Lego bricks are stored safely before they start.
